Following a tip-off, a marine police team in the district seized 90 kg of ganja allegedly intended to be smuggled to Sri Lanka through a vessel from Thondi on Sunday.

Police said that they received an information that the contraband was being transported in a van and that surveillance at the check posts was intensified. As a van approached, the police interrogations suggested that the driver identified as V. Rajamanickam, 60, of Manalmelkudi was proceeding to drop the three gunny bags which had ganja packets, to a person in Thondi.

According to a senior officer, the ganja was set to be smuggled to Sri Lanka and that they nabbed it at the right time.

The van was impounded and the driver detained for interrogation by the Devipattinam Marine Police.
