The Forest Department on Sunday placed a cage at a tea estate in Pachamalai near Valparai to trap a leopard that killed a four-year-old girl on Friday.

The cage was placed near a small forest patch in the tea estate, around 700 metres off the line houses of estate workers, where the girl was attacked by a leopard around 6.30 p.m. on Friday.

After mauling the girl, Roshini Kumari of Jharkhand, the carnivore dragged her into the tea bushes and further into an adjacent forest patch, from where remains of her body were found around 11.30 a.m. on Saturday.

Devendra Kumar Meena, Deputy Director of Pollachi Division of the Anamalai Tiger Reserve, said one or two cages might be placed in the area additionally.

According to ATR authorities, the girl’s parents moved to the tea estate at Pachamalai around 10 days ago, after quitting job in another estate at Valparai.

Pollachi Forest Range Officer Suresh Krishna said 20 pairs of camera traps have been placed near the line house of workers and the forest patch to monitor the movement of the leopard.

Pollachi MP K. Eswarasamy on Sunday handed over ₹9.5 lakh to the parents of the deceased as solatium from the State government. An immediate relief of ₹50,000 was given to the family on Saturday.
