All-India Congress Committee (AICC) general secretary and Haryana Congress in-charge B.K. Hariprasad on Monday (June 2, 2025) said party district presidents for the State would be appointed within a month, even as the ruling BJP pointed out the absence of a Leader of the Opposition (LoP) in the State.

The Congress is hasn’t picked a leader almost eight months since the new BJP government led by Nayab Singh Saini assumed office. The Opposition party has also not had an organisational set-up in place at the district and block levels in Haryana for more than a decade now.

Kick-starting the process, Congress leader and Leader of Opposition in the Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi would address the AICC and Pradesh Congress Committee (PCC) observers at the party’s Chandigarh office on June 4 after a meeting with over a dozen senior State unit leaders.

‘New Method’

Addressing a press conference at Chandigarh, Mr. Hariprasad said the Congress had dedicated the ongoing year to strengthen the organisation and a pilot project was initiated to appoint district presidents in Gujarat adopting a new method. “The appointment of district presidents in Gujarat is now complete. On a similar pattern, one AICC observer along with two-three PCC observers would decide on the appointments in Haryana,” said the former Rajya Sabha member.

Earlier, the district presidents were appointed in consultation with the PCC president and the Congress Legislature Party leader, but under the new method the appointments would be made by AICC and PCC observers, said Mr. Hariprasad.

Ahead of Mr. Gandhi’s visit, the Bharatiya Janata Party on Monday (June 2, 2025) took a dig at the Congress for what it termed as the party’s failure to choose even its Leader of Opposition in the Haryana Assembly.

“Congress expresses its views on all national issues and speaks at length about the country’s major problems, but they have not been able to decide the Leader of Opposition in just one unit of their party in a single State,” said BJP leader and Haryana’s Energy, Transport and Labour Minister Anil Vij.

Former Chief Minister Bhupinder Singh Hooda was the Leader of Opposition in the previous House.
