The Coimbatore City Municipal Corporation (CCMC) has issued work orders to re-lay over 2,500 roads across the city that were damaged due to utility works and the recent rain.
“Roads damaged for any reason will be taken up for re-laying, and the work will commence shortly,” said Corporation Commissioner M. Sivaguru Prabakaran. “Many roads have become unmotorable following heavy rain, particularly those dug for drinking water pipelines and underground drainage (UGD) works.”
To address delays in road restoration, a joint meeting was chaired by District Collector Pavankumar G. Giriyappanavar with officials from the Corporation, Tamil Nadu Water Supply and Drainage (TWAD) Board, and the Highways Department.
“The meeting was convened due to lack of coordination. TWAD is executing drinking water and UGD works on our behalf. For roads under the Highways Department, we had deposited ₹110 crore, but the department cited delays in receiving clearance from TWAD,” the Commissioner said.
He added, “We are temporarily using wet mix on damaged roads based on complaints, so they remain motorable. Bituminous (BT) layers will be laid once the rain stops. We are addressing most road-related complaints within six hours of receiving them.”
