Kozhikode Corporation’s Pakalveedu (elderly daycare centre) at Kunduparamba has been elevated by the Department of Social Justice as a model Sayamprabha home for the district. This recognition ensures an added involvement of the department in the functioning of the Pakalveedu, which has already made headlines for the activities undertaken by the elderly there.
As a model Sayamprabha home, the Kunduparamba Pakalveedu will receive financial assistance of ₹14.10 lakh from the department. The funds will support staffing requirements, including a facilitator, physiotherapist, physician, cook/attendant, and cleaning staff, as well as provide essential medicines and gym equipment. It will also cover the cost of nutritious meals and snacks, entertainment, and vocational training for senior citizens.
Additionally, the department will facilitate free medical camps and routine check-ups through AYUSH physicians, physiotherapy consultations, and the services of a specialist counsellor. Orphaned senior citizens will receive monthly doorstep delivery of food kits. The home will offer library access and promote small-scale farming among the elderly by distributing vegetable saplings and seeds. Regular cultural programmes will be organised to help senior citizens showcase their talents.
“This is a recognition for our efforts to make the Pakalveedu at Kunduparamba one of the best in the city. The additional support of the department will help it reach great heights”, said P. Divakaran, Welfare Standing Committee Chairman of Kozhikode Corporation.
In return, the Model Sayamprabha Home needs to work as a resource hub to create social awareness regarding the needs of elderly people. They should also undertake individual care of the elderly who regularly visit the home, training for caregivers and adalats in collaboration with the District Legal Services Authority.
The Pakalveedu at Kunduparamba started functioning in 2022 and has 65 members. The dish wash and hand wash brand ‘Grand Mom’s Magic’ works out of this home.
