Worried that lifestyle diseases like diabetes, high blood pressure and cholesterol might trouble you? Then come to the 360 Degree Metabolic Centre at the new outpatient block of General Hospital, Alappuzha, for early detection of lifestyle diseases- even before the symptoms appear.

The metabolic centre has served 21,626 people since its launch in October 2024. Aimed at tackling the growing burden of lifestyle diseases, the 360 Degree Metabolic Centre brings together a wide range of services under one roof, including tests for diabetes, hypertension and cholesterol, as well as assessments of kidney function, diabetes-related complications affecting the eyes and feet, pulmonary function tests and diet counselling.

“The centre aims to detect and manage diabetes complications such as diabetic retinopathy, diabetic nephropathy and peripheral neuropathy at an early stage. This approach helps in effectively controlling serious health conditions that may arise due to lifestyle diseases,” said an official

First-time visitors to the General Hospital, Alappuzha, can obtain an outpatient ticket and then proceed to the 360 Degree Metabolic Centre.

To detect diabetic retinopathy, non-mydriatic cameras have been installed at the centre. The examination area has been divided into multiple cabins for basic check-ups such as blood pressure, diabetes, and body mass index. Tests are conducted using advanced equipment, including doppler, biothesiometer, body fat impedance machine, carbon monoxide breath analyser and spirometer.

Nerve conduction study

For individuals who have had diabetes for more than five years, a nerve conduction study is conducted using a biothesiometer to determine if the condition has affected the eyes, nerves or skin. In addition, doppler tests help detect any blockages in the nerves. Patients are referred to specialists such as neurologists and ophthalmologists, if necessary.

The carbon monoxide breath analyser measures carbon monoxide levels in the lungs, while the spirometer assesses lung capacity. If patients with uncontrolled diabetes exhibit symptoms of tuberculosis (TB), their sputum samples are sent to District TB Centre laboratory for Acid-Fast Bacillus testing. The centre also offers cancer screening services, including breast and oral cancer screenings for women and men above 30 years of age.

First-time visitors to the hospital can obtain an outpatient ticket and then proceed to the 360 Degree Metabolic Centre. The process begins with registration, followed by tests for diabetes, blood pressure and related conditions. Based on the dietitian’s recommendations, patients are either advised on lifestyle changes or prescribed medication.

Lifestyle modifications

“Not all patients require medication. Many can manage or even overcome their conditions through lifestyle modifications alone. However, delay in diagnosis, failure to recognise early symptoms and lack of awareness about complications often make lifestyle diseases more dangerous,” the official said.

The 360 Degree Metabolic Centre also plays a key role in raising public awareness that regular exercise and dietary control can significantly prevent or manage lifestyle diseases.
