The India Meteorological Department (IMD) in a bulletin on July 25, 2025, forecasted heavy to extremely heavy rainfall till July 31 in several regions in West Bengal owing to a depression over coastal West Bengal and adjoining areas of Northwest Bay of Bengal and Bangladesh.

“Under influence of the above systems, widespread light to moderate rainfall with isolated heavy to very heavy rainfall and isolated extremely heavy rainfall [is] very likely over districts of South Bengal during next 24 hours. Also, due to strong monsoon flow, widespread light to moderate rainfall with isolated heavy rainfall activity [is] likely to continue in subsequent 6 days over some districts of South Bengal,” the Friday bulletin by the Regional Meteorological Centre, Kolkata, said.

It also forecasted thunderstorms with lightning and gusty wind (speed 30-40kmph) in certain places in South Bengal between July 25 and July 27.

For regions in the southern districts of West Bengal, the IMD said that waterlogging would be likely in low-lying areas and underpass roads. It also forecasted a reduction in visibility, traffic disruption, a rise in water levels of rivers, damage to crops, and an adverse impact on kutchha roads and kutchha houses.

Meanwhile, the bulletin said that temporary waterlogging in low-lying areas and lightning strikes in open fields are likely for the northern districts of West Bengal.

The IMD also issued a warning to the fisherfolk of West Bengal, advising them not to venture along and off North and central Bay of Bengal, and West Bengal and Odisha coasts from July 25 to July 29.
