All India Congress Committee general-secretary (organisation) K.C. Venugopal and Haryana in-charge B.K. Hariprasad met senior State party leaders in Delhi on Monday to discuss the formation of the organisation at the district level.

The party does not have an organisation at district and block levels in the State for more than a decade now.

The meeting assumes significance as the AICC and Pradesh Congress Committee (PCC) observers had last month submitted a panel of six names each for 30-odd district presidents’ posts to the central leadership after extensive consultations with the local leaders, social organisations and workers.

The meeting marks another step towards finalising the names for the posts before the formal announcement, expected later this month.

Both leaders held a one-to-one meeting with former Chief Minister Bhupinder Singh Hooda, Rohtak Lok Sabha MP Deepender Hooda, Sirsa MP Kumari Selja, Rajya Sabha MP Randeep Surjewala and Haryana PCC Udai Bhan, among others, to seek their views on the panel of the names.

Party leader Challa Vamshi Chand Reddy, who was last week appointed in-charge for co-ordinating the selection process, was also present.

In a shift from the earlier tradition wherein the district chiefs were appointed in consultation with the PCC president and the Congress Legislature Party leader, the party this time appointed observers to make the process transparent. Though the State has 22 districts, the number of chiefs could be more than 30, with a few districts having separate posts of urban and rural presidents. Ambala district, for instance, will have three presidents, one each for the cantonment, urban and rural area.
