After a brief respite from the heat in late May, temperatures across Telangana are rising again due to lack of rainfall over the last few days. The maximum temperatures, which had dropped to around 35–36°C after showers in Hyderabad and other parts of the State in the last week of May, are now steadily climbing.
According to the Telangana State Development Planning Society, Bhadradri Kothagudem recorded the highest maximum temperature on Monday at 39.6°C. This was closely followed by Mulugu and Nalgonda at 39.4°C, Khammam at 39.2°C, Kamareddy at 39.1°C, and Mahabubabad at 39°C. Suryapet registered 38.3°C, while Jagtial, Jogulamba Gadwal, Jangaon, Peddapalli and Nizamabad saw temperatures of 38°C. The remaining 21 districts reported temperatures ranging between 34°C and 38°C.
Urban locations also saw a rise in mercury levels. Medchal Malkajgiri recorded 35.7°C, while Hyderabad followed closely at 35.3°C.
Dharma Raju, a scientist at the India Meteorological Department centre in Hyderabad, said that while the southwest monsoon has made its way into Telangana, the impact remains subdued for now. “For the next few days, we may witness only light and scattered rainfall. A depression over the north Bay of Bengal has pulled in much of the available moisture, limiting rain-bearing clouds over Telangana,” he explained.
He further added that these conditions may result in a temporary lull in monsoon activity in the southern parts of the State. “It is likely that only light rainfall will occur over the next four to five days. Normal monsoon conditions may resume after that,” he said.
