The Madurai Bench of the Madras High Court on Friday said that the court cannot issue a direction to authorities to relocate the construction of the fish market at Nelpettai to the outskirts of Madurai.

A Division Bench of Justices S.M. Subramaniam and A.D. Maria Clete observed that it is for the Corporation to take a decision. The court was hearing a petition filed by film producer S. Adham Bava of Nelpettai.

The petitioner said the area had become congested due to the presence of the market. He also complained that waste was getting dumped in the open and it posed a threat to the residents.

He said that under these circumstances, the authorities had taken a decision to construct new shops in the place of the market as it had become dilapidated. He sought a direction to the authorities to relocate the construction of the fish market to the outskirts of Madurai.
