Doctors at the Mahatma Gandhi Memorial Government Hospital (MGMGH) in Tiruchi successfully performed a coronary artery bypass graft (CABG) surgery on a 57-year-old man this week.

According to an official release, the patient, who had coronary heart disease (CAD) and severe hypertension, had reported with complaints of chest pain and breathlessness on exertion. This was diagnosed eventually as triple vessel disease, a form of CAD where all three major coronary arteries supplying blood to the heart are significantly narrowed or blocked by plaque build up.

The patient was screened for bilateral carotids vessel and lower limb vessels’ successful skin grafting.

An elective six-hour surgery was carried out on the patient, whereby the left internal mammary artery and great saphenous vein were harvested from bilateral lower limb.

Accordingly, the left internal mammary artery end to side was anastomosed (surgically joined) with the left anterior descending artery and the great saphenous vein was grafted in different locations, to the aorta.

The patient was kept on extended post-operative ventilation with supportive care and intensive cardiac monitoring, said the release. He was ex-tubated after 16 hours of ventilation support. Once his vital signs were found to be stable, the patient was discharged on July 8.
