A 27-year-old man died allegedly during police interrogation at Thirupuvanam in Sivaganga district on Saturday (June 28, 2025).
The deceased man, B. Ajith Kumar, was a temporary security personnel at Batharakaliamman temple at Madapuram near Thirupuvanam.
On Friday, Sivagami (75) and her daughter Nikitha of Tirumangalam visited the temple in their car. As Sivagami cannot walk due to age-related ailments, Nikitha was assisting her mother Sivagami to walk inside the temple. In the meantime, they handed over the car key to Ajith Kumar for parking the vehicle. When they returned after the prayer, they allegedly found the bags in the car opened and about 10 sovereign gold ornaments in the bag were missing.
Following their complaint, Thirupuvanam police reportedly took Ajith Kumar to the police station for interrogation and was sent home later in the evening, sources said.
Again, on Saturday, he was taken by a different police wing for inquiry. During interrogation, as he allegedly fell unconscious, he was taken to a hospital in Madurai where the doctors declared him dead.
Later, family members of Ajith Kumar gathered at Thirupuvanam police station alleging custodial death. Sivaganga Superintendent of Police Ashish Rawat is investigating the matter.
