Residents of Kanchirangulam in Viradhanur panchayat submitted a petition to the District Collector M.S. Sangeetha here on Monday seeking the cancellation of a crusher quarry licence operating nearby.

According to the petitioners, the village’s primary occupation was agriculture and cattle herding.

They expressed concern that quarrying activities, which reportedly began a few days ago, posed a serious threat to their livelihood.

“As excavation works using heavy equipment was initiated, prompting residents to gather in protest. The work was subsequently halted following police intervention, with personnel from Perungudi police station deployed to the spot,” they added.

“The vibrations caused by the digging are being felt in our homes,” said Malayadian, a resident of the village.

“They have already encroached upon poramboke land. If this continues, the flow of water through sluices will be blocked, and crops like sugarcane and plantain will suffer. Necessary action must be taken to protect our livelihood,” he added.

Jayamani, another resident, said the ongoing issue has placed her family in distress. “We are forced to go back and forth to the police station. We feel threatened,” she said.

The villagers also stated that this is not the first time they have raised the issue. “We have already submitted two petitions regarding this matter,” Malayadiyan added.
