Former mayor of Mysuru Sandesh Swamy has demanded a ban on Indian Premier League (IPL), saying it has a detrimental impact on society.
His comments have come in the wake of the stampede at the RCB victory celebration in Bengaluru, which left 11 people dead and dozens injured on Wednesday.
Mr. Swamy described the IPL as a ‘threat to public life’, and said that it was a commercial enterprise driven by profit with little connection to national or regional representation or pride.
“Franchise teams do not represent the country or the State. Anyone with money can buy players and field a team. For most owners, the main aim is to make a profit,” he said.
Referring to the stampede, Mr. Swamy criticised the lack of preparedness and accountability. Urging fans to re-evaluate their priorities in life, he said admire celebrities but do not become blind followers.
“Youths must reflect whether stars or any other cricketer will actually help the families of innocent fans who had lost their lives due to excessive fan frenzy. Cricket’s past glory and dignity are steadily fading. It’s no longer just a sport, it has become a massive commercial enterprise. Fans must recognise this shift,” he said.
Mr. Swamy questioned whether celebrities, including cricketers, are responding to crucial issues related to State’s language, land, water, or the upliftment of youth.
