Canal crisis
Parakkinkal canal, which supplies water from the Sabarai check dam to Parakkai Periyakulam and Thengamputhoor Palkulam tanks is now heavily polluted. Sewage from nearby homes and drains is flowing directly into the canal, turning it into a sewage path. Overgrown weeds and plants further block the flow of water.
This pollution has led to reverse flow, contaminating the Pazhayar river up to Ozhuginesary and Vadasery. During the rainy season, this blockage causes floods in areas such as Kottar, Meenakshipuram and Ozhuginesary. Immediate action is needed to ensure smooth flow of water before monsoon intensifies.

Commuter struggle
The “Y” shaped overbridge at Murugankurichi above the Tirunelveli-Tiruchendur railway track has been a long-pending demand of road users. The government should take special efforts in commencing the work at the earliest to ease the inconvenience faced by vehicles, especially during morning and evening hours when the railway gates are closed for passing trains.

Electric woes
Coconut trees are one of the major crops of Kanniyakumari district. However, when coconut fronds fall on power lines, it often leads to power outages. During heavy winds, some coconut trees even get uprooted, bringing down electric poles. To prevent such disruptions, the government should consider installing underground electric cable systems in the district.
