A commercial building on Anna Main Road in K.K. Nagar, Ward 136 of Kodambakkam Zone, was locked and sealed by Greater Chennai Corporation officials along with police personnel for building regulation violations.
The building named ‘Saravana Stores’, initially approved as a stilt plus three-storey structure, was also issued a notice for multiple deviations from the approved plan, according to inspection records. “The 261 sq.m stilt floor, meant for parking, was used commercially without sanction. Each upper floor exceeded the approved 256.56 sq.m by 4.44 sq.m. The second and third floors, approved for residential use, were used commercially. The terrace had 45 sq.m of unauthorised commercial construction. Front and east side setbacks were short by 0.20 and 0.21 metres, and the building height exceeded the limit by 1.20 metres,” according to zonal officials.
An official said that the building was completed in 2020, and a notice was issued during the construction period, with a rectification period of two months. “However, the owners did not take corrective action within the timeframe. Earlier, the owners submitted applications for regularisation under various sections of the ULB Act to the GCC and the CMDA [Chennai Metropolitan Development Authority], but approval was not granted. As per instructions from higher authorities, under the Urban Local Bodies Act, a fresh notice was issued now,” he said.
More than 185 inspections were carried out in 2025 by zonal authorities of several buildings in Kodambakkam Zone, the official said.
