After wreaking havoc on May 30, the intensity of rains decreased in Dakshina Kannada district in coastal Karnataka on May 31.
Belandur Gram Panchayat under Puttur taluk recorded the highest rainfall in the State — 480.5 mm in 24 hours ending at 8.30 a.m. on May 31, according to Karnataka State Natural Disaster Monitoring Centre (KSNDMC).
Barya Gram Panchayat, Belthangady taluk, reported the second highest rainfall of 369 mm during the same period.
It was followed by 278.5 mm rainfall at Bellare Gram Panchayat, Sullia taluk; 272.5 mm at Ramakunja Gram Panchayat, Puttur taluk; 268.5 mm at Ilanthila Gram Panchayat, Belthangady taluk; 246 mm at Kavalamuduru Gram Panchayat, Bantwal taluk; 241 mm at Patrame Gram Panchayat, Belthangady taluk; 229.5 mm at Sarapadi Gram Panchayat, Bantwal taluk; 221.5 mm at Laila Gram Panchayat, Belthangady taluk; and 215.5 mm at Alankaru Gram Panchayat, Puttur taluk.
In addition, 24 gram panchayats in the district recorded rainfall ranging between 100 mm and 200 mm during the period.
Search for fishermen
Dinesh Gundu Rao, minister in-charge of Dakshina Kannada, told mediapersons in Mangaluru on May 31 that authorities are searching for two fishermen who were reported missing after their boat capsized near an estuary at Tota Bengre on May 30 following heavy rains and wind.
They were identified as Yashwant and Kamalaksha.
The Minister said that he has asked the Principal Secretary, Karnataka Disaster Management Authority, to visit Mangaluru on May 31, and to examine whether compensation amount given to the families of those who died in rain-related incidents on May 30 can be enhanced.
Mr. Rao said that he has asked authorities in the district to be prepared to face any emergency during the monsoon.
The Fire and Emergency Services Department has been told to get more vehicles to deal with relief operations, he said.
