The Seven Kingdoms are calling once again. HBO has unveiled the first trailer for A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms, the newest Game of Thrones prequel set a century before the events of the original series. The six-episode drama will premiere January 18 on HBO and stream on Max.

Based on George R.R. Martin’s novellas Tales of Dunk and Egg, the series follows two unlikely companions wandering across Westeros: Ser Duncan “Dunk” the Tall (Peter Claffey), a kind-hearted yet clumsy knight, and his young squire Egg (Dexter Sol Ansell), whose secret heritage ties him to the Targaryen dynasty. The trailer teases the duo crossing paths with noble houses and dangerous foes in an era when dragons were fading into legend.

The show’s ensemble includes Finn Bennett as Prince Aerion Targaryen, Bertie Carvel as Prince Baelor, Daniel Ings as Ser Lyonel Baratheon, and Tanzyn Crawford as Tanselle, a Dornish puppeteer.

Showrunner Ira Parker described the new series as “closer to the mud than the throne,” with a grittier, more intimate tone than its predecessors. “It’s not the big, sprawling Game of Thrones we’ve come to know and love,” Parker said at New York Comic Con. “We’re starting at the bottom — with knights, dirt, and dreams.”

Martin, who co-created and executive produces alongside Parker, hinted that while the series is smaller in scale, Westeros remains as unpredictable as ever: “No one is truly safe.”
