Fathima (aged about 10 years) died when the retaining wall behind her house at Kanakere, Belma village, near Deralakatte on the outskirts of Mangaluru, collapsed. The window of the house fell on her when the retaining wall slipped. Though she was admitted to a hospital, she could not be saved, sources said.

Sources said that Prema (50) died in a landslip at Kodi, near Montepadavu, under Manjanady Gram Panchayat in Ullal taluk, on the outskirts of Mangaluru. The landslip occurred behind her house. Efforts were on to rescue four others who were stuck under the debris.
Several areas flooded
Some areas in Mangaluru city, like Jeppinamogaru, Rao and Rao Circle, Mission Street and Kopparahitlu, were flooded and there were reports of trees falling.
Sources said that a tree fell on the railway track between Mangaluru Central Railway Station and Netravathi Cabin disrupting movement of trains. Hence, train operations were shifted to Mangaluru Junction Railway Station.
The circulating and parking area of Mangaluru Central Railway Station were under water.
A tree fell on Kuntikana-KSRTC Bus Stand on Bejai Road, which had an impact on movement of vehicles.
Due to lack of proper storm water drainage system, some stretches on PVS Circle-Karangalpady Road, Ambedkar Circle-Kankanady Road, Kankanady-Mangaladevi Road were under water.
As the raja kaluve (storm water drain) at Yekkur was overflowing, nearby areas were inundated. Water entered several houses in Jeppinamogaru, which is a flood-prone area.
There was a landslip near Jokatte Gram Panchayat on the outskirts of Mangaluru, which was posing a danger to a building.
Source said that several low-lying houses in and around Ullal, such as in Kallapu, Uchchila, Kalkatta, Kumpala, Dharmanagara, Vidyanagara, Talapady, were inundated with water entering some houses. Some families shifted to safer areas.
Holiday declared
Dakshina Kannada and Udupi district administration declared holiday for anganwadis, primary and high schools on May 30 in view of heavy rains. Government schools were to re-open after summer holidays on May 30, but they did not due to the rains.
