A youth arrested outside the Kannur Central Jail in Kerala has revealed that he used to receive ₹1,000 to ₹2,000 for smuggling intoxicants and mobile phones into the prison.
During police interrogation, the accused, identified as Akshay of Puthiyatheru, admitted that he used to hurl beedis, ganja and mobile phones into the jail compound whenever he received a signal from the inmates. He told investigators that this had been his source of income.
Akshay was caught by the police in front of the jail on Sunday morning while attempting to throw a bundle inside. Two others who accompanied him managed to escape on seeing the police.
The police said the accused would be produced before the court soon.
Authorities have intensified surveillance around the jail premises in the wake of the incident.
