A 73-year-old man from the city lost ₹34.15 lakh to an online investment fraud.
In a complaint, the victim said one Laxmipriya Panda called him through WhatsApp. Assuring good returns for investment in UC Trade, she asked the victim to invest in it by downloading the Trustline App. The victim downloaded the app. He invested a total of ₹34.15 lakh by transferring amounts to different accounts between July 28 and August 2. The amount was transferred through RTGS/NEFT/IMPS/UPI. When he asked for the return of the invested amount, the operators allegedly demanded more money.
Realising that he had been cheated, the elderly man filed a complaint at a police station here. The complaint was registered for an offence punishable under Section 66(D) of the IT Act.
Service fraud
A 27-year-old woman from Udupi lost over ₹47,191 to a caller claiming to be a representative of the Nykaa Online Shopping company. In the complaint, the woman said she received a call on August 21 and the caller said that because of the wrong pin code, her order had been stopped. To revive the order, she has to pay an amount which will be refunded later. The victim transferred a total of ₹47,191. When she did not get any amount in return, she filed a complaint with the Udupi Town police. The complaint was registered for offences punishable under 318(4) of BNS and section 66(d) of the IT Act.
