Two days after after three girl students of a government school near Coimbatore raised sexual harassment charges against two teachers, the police registered a case against them under provisions of the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act on Sunday.
Coimbatore District (Rural) Superintendent of Police K. Karthikeyan confirmed the development and added that more details could not be divulged as a detailed investigation was in progress.
It was on Friday, two videos of three girl students of a government school in Kinathukadavu block in the district, levelling sexual harassment charges against botany and music teachers, circulated on messaging platforms. They alleged that the music teacher touched them inappropriately during dance practices and the botany teacher did the same on the pretext of patting them as a gesture of encouragement. They accused another male teacher of coming to the school under the influence of alcohol. The girls, with their faces masked, alleged that they exposed the teachers through the video after finding no relief from the school authorities.
After the videos were widely circulated, the district police conducted an inquiry with girl students of the school on Friday and Saturday. The School Education Department and the District Child Protection Unit (DCPU) also conducted separate inquiries into the allegations.
A senior police officer said that the two teachers were booked for offences under Sections 7 (sexual assault) and 8 (punishment for sexual assault) of POCSO Act, based on a complaint received from an officer from DCPU.
