The two-day Centre of Indian Trade Unions (CITU) Salem district conference began on Saturday (August 23, 2025) and various resolutions were passed.
The conference was held in a marriage hall at Five Roads in Salem. Salem district CITU president T. Udhayakumar presided over the conference and deputy president S.K. Thiyagarajan hoisted the CITU flag. CITU state president A. Soundararajan delivered the inaugural address at the conference.
Various resolutions were passed, including steps to regularise anganwadi workers and to provide 30 days of summer holidays for them. Establishment of separate welfare board for load men, release of pending dues and payment of Deepavali bonus for construction workers.
As part of privatising the bus transport, the Tamil Nadu government implemented schemes like e-pass. The privatisation should be avoided and the monetary benefits of the retired transport workers should be provided immediately. A private electronics company on Pudhu Road in Salem was closed without the permission of the State government and 400 workers were affected. The State government should take steps to run the company, CITU added in its resolutions.
Demanding the State government to fill vacancies in the Tamil Nadu Electricity Board, the CITU demanded to regularise the contract workers and to drop the installation of smart meter scheme. The Tamil Nadu government, which waived the ₹10,054 crore farmers loan, should be provided to the cooperative societies.
The 1,400 acres kept unused at Salem Steel Plant should be used to establish a defence corridor and the State government should interfere. The Sail Refractory company should be modernised and contract workers of the company should be regularised, the CITU added. The conference will conclude with a rally and public meeting on Sunday (August 24, 2025).
