Residents of various areas of Chennai will soon get an additional supply of water. The project to lay a second pipeline to convey more water from the Chembarambakkam treatment plant to the existing network till Koyambedu is currently on a trial run.
The ₹66.78 crore project is set to be inaugurated shortly. This would enable Chennai Metrowater to increase the water supply from 265 million litres a day (mld) to 530 mld, which is the full capacity of the treatment plant. Municipal Administration Minister K.N.Nehru inspected the work on Wednesday.
A press release stated that residents of several areas, including Anna Nagar, Ambattur, Kodambakkam, Valasaravakkam, Adyar, and Alandur zones within the Greater Chennai Corporation, as well as Tambaram Corporation, Kundrathur, and Sriperumbudur municipalities, will benefit from the project.
The pipeline will travel for 11.7 km from Chembarambakkam to Porur, and the second portion of the pipeline will travel another 9.2 km from the Poonamallee Bypass Road junction to Koyambedu.
The project, chalked out in 2013, faced various challenges, including the complex task of laying the pipeline at a depth of 6 feet below the ground level. Minister for Minorities Welfare S.M.Nasar, Poonamallee MLA A.Krishnaswamy, elected representatives from GCC and senior officials were present.
