A 40-year-old farmer was arrested by Pernambut police in Vellore on Tuesday in connection with a country gun making unit that was found by police during a surprise-check at his farmland.

Police said the arrested person, G. Saravanan, a native of Aravatla, a border village on T.N – A.P near Pernambut town in Vellore. He cultivates paddy and groundnuts in his three-acre farmland.

Based on an alert, Pernambut police conducted a surprise-check at his farm and found two country made weapons, wooden logs, steel pipes and cutting machines. Police said that he had set up basic machinery for welding and cutting steel rods that is used to make guns. He also allegedly sourced gun powder to make the pellets. 

Police said that through contacts, other suspects got in touch with him to buy guns. Each gun was sold between ₹10,000 to 15,000 with pellets. The sold guns were mainly used to hunt rabbits and spotted deer in the forests along the border.

Pernambut police registered a case against Saravanan and lodged him at Central Prison in Vellore. Further probe is under way.
