The newly-electrified Ramanathapuram – Rameswaram section was energised in the wee hours of Wednesday. An electric loco trial run has been scheduled in the section after 10 p.m. on Wednesday.

The section covers 52 route kilometres (total track length 65 km) and includes two switching stations at Uchipuli and Mandapam. It will soon be submitted for authorisation by the Principal Chief Electrical Engineer, Southern Railway, a statement said.

To facilitate further AC loco trials and trial train operations, 25 kV power supply will continue to be maintained in the Overhead Equipment (OHE) system.

Safety advisory

The OHE system carries a high voltage of 25,000 Volts (25 kV). Public, passengers, and workers are strictly advised to follow safety precautions.

They should not touch overhead wires or related equipment, directly or indirectly and maintain a minimum distance of two metres from the OHE to avoid the risk of electric shock, the statement said.

Besdies, they should avoid using unfolded umbrellas under OHE during rain or lightning.

People have been advised against climbing on locomotives, carriages, or wagons. Several electrocution incidents have occurred due to people taking selfies from the roof.

They should also avoid throwing objects onto OHE lines from overbridges or foot overbridges. People should not cut or trim trees near OHE without prior railway permission.

Safety at level crossings

People should not travel on the top of vehicles and avoid overloading goods vehicles. Height gauges have been provided before level crossings to indicate the maximum permissible height for vehicles, preventing untoward incidents. Carrying metal flagpoles or other tall items above the permitted height can be dangerous when passing under OHE lines, the statement said.
