The Federation for People’s Rights has sought stringent action against police personnel, including a woman Sub-Inspector of Police, responsible for the alleged assault and illegal detention of four women working in a resort in Pudukuppam.

In a statement, G. Sugumaran, secretary of FPR, said four police personnel attached to the Thavalakuppam police station had detained four women working in a resort in Pudukuppam for enquiry in connection with a theft case on May 11.

The police personnel, he alleged, had brutally assaulted the women, and one of the women’s husband had died in a hospital due to mental agony. Subsequently, the four police officers were transferred in the wake of protests by political parties, he said.

Stating that women should not be called for enquiry to the station, Mr. Sugumaran said the four women were illegally detained and physically assaulted on the premises till 1 a.m., in violation of rules.

“It is a serious offence. The government should suspend the officers with immediate effect and order a departmental enquiry against them. It should also provide adequate compensation to the four women,” he said.
