Forty-six police stations (Law and Order) now manned by Sub Inspectors of Police in various districts in the Central Zone have been upgraded. They will now be headed by officers in the rank of Inspectors of Police.

The State government has issued an order upgrading a total number of 280 Sub Inspector manned police stations all over the State. Of this, 46 fall under the Central Zone, which encompasses Tiruchi, Pudukottai, Karur, Perambalur, Ariyalur, Thanjavur, Tiruvarur, Nagapattinam and Mayiladuthurai districts.

The government order on Monday comes in the wake of an announcement made by Chief Minister M.K. Stalin in respect of upgradation of 280 police stations during the Budget session while replying to the Police demand in April 2025.  In pursuance to the announcement, the Director General of Police and the Head of Police Force sent a proposal requesting the State government to upgrade 280 police stations.. 

The government after careful examination of the proposal accepted it and issued the order on August 4.  In Tiruchi district, Manikandam, Pettavaithalai, Kallakudi, Kollidam, Kattuputhur, Uppiliapuram, Puthanatham and Valanadu police stations have been upgraded. Maruvathur, V. Kalathur and Kai Kalathur police stations in Perambalur district and Kairulabath, Thalavai, Erumbulikurichi and Vikkiramangalam stations in Ariyalur district have been upgraded. 

Thanthonimalai, Velliyanai, Vangal, Chinnadharapuram and Thennilai police stations in Karur district; Sampathuviduthi, Malaiyur, Vellanur, Arimalam, Adanakottai, Namanasamudram, Karur, Embal, Jagathapattinam and Nagudi police stations in Pudukottai district; Tamil University, Patteswaram, Pattukottai Taluk, Naducauvery, Sengipatti, Thiruneelakudi, Thiruvonam and Vattathikottai police stations in Thanjavur distict are also among the upgraded stations.

Two stations in Nagapattinam- Thittacheri and Thirukkuvalai – have been upgraded, while the Vaitheeswaran Koil station has been upgraded in Mayiladuthurai district. In Tiurvarur district, the Vaipoor, Eravanchery, Mannargudi Taluk, Thalayamangalam and Alivalam police stations have been upgraded.

The upgradation of the police stations have been done with a view to improving delivery of service to the public and to provide an opportunity for promotions to the Sub Inspectors of Police who have been stagnating in their current posts for a long time, the order further said.

The Sub Inspector manned stations come under a Circle. Grave crimes such as murder, robbery and dacoity besides multiple death accidents have to be investigated only by the Inspector of Police as per the existing norms. The Circle Inspector of Police is in charge of two to three stations in a circle and has to investigate a large number of grave crimes which affects the quality of investigation, the order further said adding that 280 posts of Sub Inspector of Police be upgraded as Inspector of Police with immediate effect.
