With the Karnataka State Road Transport Corporation (KSRTC) Employees Union set to launch an indefinite strike from August 5, the Transport Department has initiated a plan to minimise disruption for commuters.
Transport Commissioner A.M. Yogeesh held a meeting with private bus operators on Saturday to explore alternative arrangements. Officials discussed the possibility of deploying private buses in case the strike severely affects public transportation, especially in urban and semi-urban areas.
Speaking to The Hindu, a senior official from the Transport Department said, “As part of our preparedness and Plan B, we are gearing up for any eventuality if the strike goes ahead. On Monday, Chief Minister Siddaramaiah will be meeting union leaders to address their concerns. However, we are preparing for all scenarios.”
The Joint Action Committee (JAC) of KSRTC has called for the strike demanding wage revision and resolution of long-pending issues. The strike, if it proceeds, is expected to impact services across Karnataka.
Following the meeting with private operators, the Transport Commissioner also held a virtual conference with all deputy commissioners and senior officials from KSRTC and other transport corporations to assess potential disruptions and mitigation strategies.
Meanwhile, the Chief Minister is scheduled to hold discussions with union representatives at the Vidhana Soudha on August 4, in a last-minute effort to avert the strike, according to the Chief Minister’s Office.
