After remaining silent for years, the iconic clock tower at the Thrissur Collectorate has been restored to working condition once again, much to the delight of staff and the general public.
The heritage structure, which once stood as a proud symbol of precision and legacy, is now back to marking time accurately on the Collectorate complex.
The revival effort began in March this year, when District Collector Arjun Pandian took note of the deteriorated condition of the clock tower. Following an inspection with Additional District Magistrate T. Murali, the Collector directed the Public Works department (PWD) to assess and address the damage.
The PWD (Buildings Division) identified key mechanical faults that had rendered the clock non-functional. Under the supervision of the Department of Industries and with support from the Confederation of Indian Industry, the tower underwent a thorough mechanical restoration.
All repair work has now been completed, and the clock is once again fully operational, keeping time with precision.
For many in Thrissur, the reactivation of this once-dormant structure is a heartening sight. A familiar part of the cityscape since the inception of the Collectorate building, the clock tower’s restoration symbolises a renewed commitment to preserving public heritage and enhancing civic pride.
Alongside the clock tower repairs, broader plans are also under way to improve the functionality and public-friendliness of the Collectorate. A medical centre was recently opened within the Civil Station compound to provide emergency aid to employees and visitors.
Additionally, a comprehensive renovation blueprint has been submitted to the government, which includes landscaping, access roads, fencing, and the development of a crèche.
