The residential school for the children of construction workers sanctioned for Dakshina Kannada district by the government of Karnataka will be established at Kuriya village, said Puttur MLA Ashok Kumar Rai.
According administrative approval for Karnataka Building and Other Construction Workers’ Welfare Board’s proposal to set up residential schools for the children of beneficiaries of the board in 31 districts, the government on July 22 said the proposed school for Dakshina Kannada district would come up at Kuriya, located 12 km away from Puttur town.
Mr. Rai earmarked 15 acres of land in Kuriya village for the purpose. He thanked Labour Minister Santosh Lad and the board for choosing Puttur constituency for establishing the school that ‘would go a long way in providing quality and free education to the children of construction workers’.
While the government has allowed the Board to spend ₹1,125 crore to establish residential schools in 31 districts, the school in Puttur would come up at a cost of ₹37.65 crore. While ₹33 crore would be spent on construction of classrooms, rooms for sports, library, laboratory, office, hostels for boys and girls, ₹90 lakh would be spent on constructing a compound wall, ₹3 crore would be spent on furniture and ₹75 lakh would be spent on laboratory equipment.
Stating that the school could accommodate up to 1,000 students, Mr. Rai informed that it would be the largest residential school in the district. Children could enrol from class 6 to 12 in the residential school.
The MLA thanked Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah and Deputy CM D. K. Shivakumar for sanctioning the school to his constituency.
