A gas leak from an overturned LPG tanker lorry on the national highway at Kanhangad in Kasaragod, Kerala, sparked panic on Friday (July 25, 2025), prompting authorities to enforce a high alert and block traffic on the busy route.
The accident took place on Thursday. However, the leak was discovered around 10 a.m. on Friday while operations to lift the vehicle were under way. Lifting of the vehicle was immediately halted and additional units of Fire and Rescue Services were rushed in from Kasaragod and Kuttikol. A special team, including gas company officials, fire force personnel and technical experts is overseeing the operation to safely transfer the gas to another tanker.
Entry to the accident site has been strictly prohibited. Electricity supply in the vicinity was cut as a precautionary measure. Traffic along the highway remains halted, with vehicles being diverted through alternate routes.
Local administration has imposed restrictions in three wards, declaring Friday a local holiday. All education institutions, anganwadis and commercial establishments in the affected area remain shut.
Officials said the tanker will only be moved after the leak is fully sealed to avoid any risk.
Communication issues are affecting information flow from the site, but security measures have been tightened to ensure public safety.
