At least 10 cases of leptospirosis and four deaths due to the infection have been reported in Kozhikode district so far this month. The number of fever cases has also been rising.

According to data available with the Health department, the four deaths — including both confirmed and probable cases — were reported from Karassery, Thiruvangur, Chaliyam, and Perumanna. The persistent rain and resulting waterlogging are believed to be contributing factors. The department had issued an alert as early as May, warning of a possible spike in leptospirosis cases and calling for preventive measures. People who may have to venture into murky water are advised to take doxycycline tablets. Those experiencing fever, headache, fatigue, severe muscle pain, or symptoms of hepatitis A should seek medical treatment.

Meanwhile, around 1,000 fever cases are being reported daily at various hospitals across Kozhikode. Since July 1, nearly 20,000 people have sought treatment for fever at government hospitals. Hepatitis A cases are also being reported. A majority of patients in general wards of both government and private hospitals are those suffering from fever. At the Government Medical College Hospital, Kozhikode, patients are often forced to lie on the floors and in corridors due to shortage of beds. School students have also been affected.

There has been a spike in dengue fever cases as well, with over 100 cases reported since the beginning of the month. Nadapuram, Cheekkilod, Valayam, Thuneri, Vanimel, Cheruvannur, Olavanna, and Thikkodi are among the affected areas. Over 200 cases of hepatitis A and one death have also been reported.
