A senior citizen died on the spot when he was run over by a KSRTC bus at Srirampura in Mysuru on Thursday.

The victim was identified as Purushothamiah, 71, who was returning home on his two-wheeler after procuring milk from a nearby booth.

The accident took place when the KSRTC bus rear-ended the scooter throwing Mr. Purushothamiah off balance, following which he came under the wheels of the bus. The K.R. traffic police have registered a case for further investigation. The accident was also captured on CCTV surveillance camera.

Meanwhile, a section of citizens have drawn attention of the police and the district administration of rampant encroachment of streets and footpath by vendors. This not only reduces the space available for navigating the vehicles, but also jeopardises the safety of two-wheeler drivers and pedestrians, they said.

There is an unbridled proliferation of street vendors in recent months in Mysuru, and has reached a point where even residential areas are no longer spared, raising concerns about public safety, the citizens said. But the authorities have turned a blind eye towards the growing menace, they added.
