The Principal District and Sessions Judge, Madurai, granted anticipatory bail to the parents of Boopalan, a police constable from Madurai who was arrested recently for torturing his wife demanding more dowry.

Principal District and Sessions Judge S. Sivakadatcham granted anticipatory bail to Boopalan’s parents V. Senthilkumaran and S. Vijaya, who submitted that they were innocent and had not committed any offences. They were living separately in Saptur and were in no way connected with the offences, they said.

According to the prosecution, Thanga Priya was married to Boopalan in 2017. The couple have two children. Boopalan was working at Appanthirupathi police station. Thanga Priya was a teacher at a private school. She was being tortured by her husband who demanded more dowry from her parents.

The Public Prosecutor submitted that on July 16, while Boopalan and Thanga Priya were in their house, he abused her using vulgar words and forced her to go to her parents’ home and get more cash or jewellery. When she refused, he assaulted her, threatening her with dire consequences. She suffered multiple injuries. Investigation was pending, the Public Prosecutor submitted and objected to the grant of anticipatory bail to the petitioners.

The judge observed that on perusal of the FIR, it appeared that the main allegations were levelled against Boopalan who was in custody. Custodial interrogation of the parents of Boopalan was not necessary in the case, the judge observed and granted anticipatory bail to the petitioners.
