The Madurai City Police on Wednesday (July 23, 2025) night seized ₹3.80 crore in currency, suspected to be linked to hawala transactions, from five individuals within the Vilakkuthoon police station limits.
Acting on a tip-off, a team of police led by Assistant Commissioner of Police A. Soorakumaran and Vilakkuthoon police station Inspector Sankar Kannan rounded up the suspects and seized five bags full of currency notes in the denomination of ₹500.
The police apprehended five individuals: three from Maharashtra and two others who are originally from the State but now reside in Madurai.
After a brief interrogation, as the police suspected that the money was part of a hawala transaction, they handed over the suspects and the seized currency to the officials of the Income Tax Department for further probe, the police said.
