After a brief lull, rains accompanied by winds are picking up strength over Kerala, influenced by the weather systems in the Bay of Bengal.

Heavy rainfall was reported in many places in Kerala on Wednesday (July 23, 2025). Cheruthoni and Udumbannoor in Idukki recorded the highest rainfall of 10 cm during the last 24 hours ending at 8:30 a.m. on Thursday (July 24, 2025), followed by Peerumedu and Udumbannoor in Idukki and Laha in Pathanamthitta with 9 cm each, while Kannur, Konni in Pathanamthitta, Haripad and Mancompu in Alappuzha, Ranni in Pathanamthitta, and Bayar in Kasaragod recorded 8 cm of rain each during this period.

Winds also gained strength, with gusty winds with speeds above 20 knots per hour witnessed in many places. The highest speed of wind was noticed in Idukki with 57 kmph during the same period, followed by Ernakulam (54 kmph), Thiruvananthapuram (48 kmph), Thrissur (44 kmph), Kottayam (43 kmph), and Pathanamthitta (43 kmph).

The rainfall and the winds are expected to further strengthen from Friday as the remnants of the tropical cyclone Wipha that emerged over the north Bay of Bengal are likely to take the shape of a low pressure over the same region during the next 24 hours, strengthening the flow of westerly winds from the Arabian Sea. In addition, a trough also runs from the northeast Arabian Sea to the cyclonic circulation over the west-central and adjoining northwest Bay of Bengal in middle tropospheric levels.

This will cause some intense spells across the core monsoon region on the west coast of the country, including coastal Karnataka, parts of Kerala, and south interior Karnataka, along with coastal Andhra Pradesh.

Meanwhile, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a yellow alert for eight districts — Pathanamthitta, Alappuzha, Kottayam, Idukki, Kozhikode, Wayanad, Kannur, and Kasaragod — on Thursday where isolated heavy rains are to occur during the next 24 hours.

The entire State has also been put on heavy to very heavy rain alert on Friday.
