Representatives of various social organisations, led by Independent legislator Nehru alias Kuppusamy, on Tuesday (July 22, 2025) appealed to Chief Minister N. Rangasamy to be more “proactive” in putting pressure on the Union government regarding Puducherry’s Statehood issue

In a memorandum submitted to Mr. Rangasamy, the leaders said his All India N.R. Congress (AINRC) is an ally of the BJP, and as the same alliance is in power at the Centre as well as in the UT, the Chief Minister could put “pressure” on the Union government to obtain Statehood for Puducherry.

Urging the Chief Minister to convene an all-party meeting to evolve a strategy to take the Statehood demand forward, the representatives said the government should reach out to the MPs in Tamil Nadu to speak in support of Puducherry’s demand in Parliament.

“The time is right for the government to put pressure on the Central government. Political parties in Puducherry should be united, and the Chief Minister should take the lead to marshal support for our demand. After convening an all party meeting, a special session of the Assembly should be convened to discuss the issue. We should take a delegation to Delhi during the ongoing Parliament session to garner support at the national level,” Mr. Nehru told reporters at the Assembly.

Many national parties are speaking in favour of restoring Statehood for Jammu and Kashmir, he said, adding that the Chief Minister should use the opportunity to gain maximum support for Puducherry’s case now.
