Two college students from Tiruchi drowned in the Kollidam river near the Grand Anicut (Kallanai) in Thanjavur district on Sunday evening.

The deceased were identified as Prasad, 19 and Lokesh, 22, both residents of Alanganathapuram Fourth Street in Tharanallur, Tiruchi. Prasad was a second-year B. Com student at a private college in Tiruchi.

Police said the two had come along with their friends, Giri , 21, and Vicky, 21, to visit the Grand Anicut and spend the evening by the riverside. The group entered the Kollidam river for a swim, when Prasad and Lokesh were reportedly swept away by the current. Despite efforts by their friends and others nearby, the two could not be rescued in time.

Alerted by bystanders, Thogur police reached the spot and retrieved both bodies. The deceased were sent for post-mortem to the Government Hospital in Budalur.

A case has been registered and further investigation is under way.
