A man drowned while attempting to rescue a cat that had fallen into a well in Erode on Saturday night (July 19, 2025).

Selvam, a tea shop owner on Thiru Vee Ka Street in Surampatti, noticed a cat struggling inside a 20-foot-deep well located near his shop. He tried to save the animal by lowering a bucket , but his efforts were unsuccessful.

A local resident, Ganesan, 42, arrived at the scene and climbed into the well to rescue the cat. However, while trying to lift the cat, Ganesan drowned.

Selvam immediately alerted the Erode South Police and the Fire and Rescue Services Department. The fire and police personnel rushed to the spot and began rescue operations. After about 30 minutes, firefighters retrieved Ganesan’s body and sent it to the Erode District Headquarters Hospital for a post-mortem examination. The police have registered a case.
