The Greater Chennai Corporation (GCC) Council on Wednesday (May 28, 2025) passed a resolution permitting the Tamil Nadu Green Energy Corporation to set up electric vehicle (EV) charging stations at parks, parking lots, playgrounds, and beaches.

Following demands from residents over the past few months, The Hindu had carried a series of stories about the civic issues pertaining to EV charging stations across the city.

In the Adyar zone of the GCC, electric vehicle charging stations are likely to be set up at the Besant Nagar beach parking lot on Urur Olcott Road in division 174; the Thiruvanmiyur Beach parking lot at Valmiki Nagar in division 180; and Sri Ashtalakshmi Temple parking lot in Kalakshetra Colony in division 179.

In Teynampet zone, Nageswara Rao park near Luz Church in division 123, Semmozhi Poonga parking lot on Cathedral Road in division 118, and Marina Beach parking lot in division 114 are expected to get EV charging stations.

Bougainvillea Park of Chennai Corporation in division 102 and Chetpet Eco Park of the Fisheries Department in division 99 in Anna Nagar zone are also likely to get EV charging stations. Somasundaram Ground and Corporation Playground parking lot in division 133 and Natesan Park in T. Nagar in division 133 in Kodambakkam zone are expected to get the facility.

In Ambattur zone, an EV charging station is expected to be set up in Mangal Eri Park in division 92. The National Art Gallery parking lot in Egmore is also likely to get an EV charging station.

More locations are expected to be identified shortly. The civic body is yet to identify land in areas of north Chennai for EV charging stations. Residents have requested the Chennai Corporation to provide EV charging services at a subsidised cost, said DMK councillor T.V. Shemmozhi, while speaking at the council meeting about the need for more charge point operators across the city.
