Four members of a gang of fraudsters, who allegedly robbed several jewellery shop owners by impersonating police, were arrested by Ichoda police in Adilabad district on Thursday.
The arrested were involved in several extortion cases in Hyderabad, Chennai and Bengaluru. They were not involved in any offence in Adilabad, police said.
The accused were identified as Shaik Irfan, 24, Ch Prashanth, 24, B. Ajay, 29, and B. Sudhakar, 28, all hailing from Nidamanur village in Nalgonda district. One more member of the gang is at large.
The main accused impersonating as a sub-inspector of police from Adilabad district made phone calls to several unsuspecting jewellers and gold shop-owners threatening them with implicating in cases on charges of buying stolen gold. He along with his accomplices allegedly coerced them to transfer money online.
A car, an auto and a two-wheeler, 1.36 grams of gold and 14 tolas of silver ornaments were recovered from the arrested accused.
