The concessionaire of the Tiruchi-Padalur section of the Chennai-Tiruchi National Highway has taken up repairs to fill a small cavity that had developed on one of the lanes on the road surface of the overbridge near Golden Rock on Tiruchi-Chennai Bypass Road.
The cavity, suspected to have been caused by a water leak from an old underground water pipeline, was noticed on Thursday. Sources said a cavity of 1×1 metre dimension had developed due to the sustained pressure from the water leak.
As motorists experienced a jolt, a small stretch of one of the two lanes on the descent of the bridge leading towards Ariyamangalam was closed for traffic. The cavity was filled with wet mix macadam. The short stretch will be kept under observation for two or three days as a precautionary measure and to assess any further impact. Traffic would be allowed after the damaged area is patched up using Dense Bituminous Macadam, the sources said.
