A road accident in the early hours of Tuesday, July 1 claimed the life of an unidentified pedestrian and left a police officer injured in a subsequent collision on the Balanagar flyover.

According to the Balanagar Inspector T. Narsimha Raju, the incident was reported at around 2.30 a.m. when a pedestrian, aged about 30 years, was walking along the flyover en route from Balanagar to Kukatpally.

“The man was walking on the flyover in an inebriated condition was struck by a speeding hatchback. The impact of the incident led to his death on the spot,” the official explained. The car driver, identified as Syed Zafar, 49, a resident of Turkapally village, Shamirpet, was taken into custody.

Upon receiving a Dial 100 alert, the local patrol team and Sub-Inspector Sarvamkota Venkatesham rushed to the scene. While the officer was overseeing the removal of the body using an ambulance, a speeding goods carrier vehicle travelling from Kandlakoya towards Madhapur, rammed into the ambulance at around 3.10 a.m.

The impact resulted in injuries to officer Venkatesham and he was shifted to a private hospital for treatment. His condition is said to be stable. The driver, 22-year-old Soni Gond, a native of Bihar, has also been taken into custody. Further investigation is underway.
