Inflow into Mettur Dam in Salem increased to 56,000 cusecs and water is discharged for canal irrigation on Tuesday (July 1, 2025) evening.
The dam’s water and storage levels stood at their full capacities of 120 feet and 93.47 tmc ft, respectively. Inflow into the dam increased to 56,000 cusecs from Monday (June 30, 2025) ’s inflow of 48,000 cusecs. The amount of water discharged from the dam into River Cauvery for delta irrigation also increased to 56,000 cusecs.
As the dam attained its full capacity, 500 cusecs of water was discharged for canal irrigation from Tuesday evening.
Officials attached to the Water Resources Department said that the customary date of water opening for canal irrigation is August 1. As sufficient water is available in the dam, the State government instructed to discharge water on Tuesday evening for the next 137 days. Initially 500 cusecs will be discharged and in the coming days it will be increased to 1,000 cusecs. Through the opening of water for canal irrigation, 45,000 acres will get irrigated in Salem, Namakkal, and Erode districts, officials added.
