BJP Tamil Nadu president Nainar Nagenthran, on Sunday (June 29, 2025) condemned the alleged custodial death of a 27-year-old man in Sivaganga district and called for the immediate intervention of Chief Minister M.K. Stalin.
“It is shocking that a young man named Ajith Kumar, who was taken in for police inquiry, has died – allegedly due to brutal custodial torture. A temporary staff member at the Madappuram Badrakaliyamman Temple, he was taken under the pretext of investigation and reportedly beaten over two days by seven policemen. His family claims this led to his death,” Mr. Nagenthran said in a statement.
Recalling a recent incident, he said that three women, including a pregnant woman, were allegedly assaulted by policemen when they approached a police station to file a sexual harassment complaint. “Now, Ajith Kumar’s brother has said that the two of them were tied with a rope and beaten while being transported in a vehicle. This points to a growing trend of police brutality,” he said.
Accusing the ruling DMK government of failing to ensure the safety of vulnerable sections, Mr. Nagenthran said that under its regime, even police stations are no longer safe spaces for the poor and the marginalised.
