A mainline electrical multiple unit (MEMU) train bound for Katpadi derailed near Arakkonam on Friday night. The accident led to a delay in the running of mail and express trains passing through Arakkonam.
A senior official of the Chennai division of Southern Railway said a nine-car MEMU train, operated from Arakkonam to Katpadi, was proceeding from Sitheri when the third coach derailed due to a fracture in the track around 9.45 p.m. on Friday. However, there were not many passengers on the train.
Even as the maintenance staff are engaged in rectifying the track fracture to re-rail the coach, several mail and express trains operated via Arakkonam from the Dr. MGR Chennai Central railway station have been delayed.
