Stating that more arrests will follow in the cocaine case involving actor Srikanth, the city police filed a petition before Metropolitan Magistrate in Egmore seeking an order for custodial interrogation for three days.
On Monday night, Srikanth was produced before the Metropolitan Magistrate in Egmore and remanded to judicial custody. On Tuesday, a bail petition was filed on behalf of him.
The city police said actor Srikanth was arrested after subjecting him to medical examination, analysing money transactions, searching his house and based on appropriate evidence. In this case, investigation would lead to more arrests, the police said.
Police said the investigation started with the clash between two groups at a bar in Nungambakkam on May 5. Two cases were booked against both groups. Seven persons including Prasad (who was an AIADMK functionary) were arrested in one case and one person was arrested in another case.
After investigation, police found that Prasad had been involved in offences and had cheated over 200 persons by promising government jobs and collecting money from Rs 2 lakh to Rs 20 lakh each.
Apart from these cases, one more case was booked against Prasad for indulging in extortion. In this case, two sub-inspectors were subjected to interrogation and one more was arrested. Further interrogation led to stumbling upon the links between Prasad and a drug cartel comprising Prado alias Pradeep and his associates including John, a Ghana national who was operating from Bengaluru.
Police alleged that he obtained cocaine from them for the last three years and sold it to his friends in his close circle including actor Srikanth and money transaction details and electronic evidence were gathered.
Investigation also revealed that Prasad and his associate Ajay Vandaiyar had threatened landowners in Chennai and other places. So far, three cases were booked against Ajay Vandaiyar and his associates, and 22 persons were arrested. Five of them were detained under the Goondas act, police said. Police further said that the investigation was in full swing and more arrests would follow.
