Work on a modern ‘Matsya Gramam’ (fishing village) will begin at Nayarambalam on May 29. Union Minister of State for Fisheries George Kurian would inaugurate the project, K.N. Unnikrishnan, MLA, told the media here on Monday. Fisheries Minister Saji Cherian will preside over the function.

There are nine separate components in the Matsya Gramam project. They include a fish landing centre to be set up at the Valiyathanparambu beach at a cost of ₹1.6 crore. Solar panels will be installed, and a borewell for water supply will be set up as part of the project.

A fish processing unit and a toilet block will be established at a cost of ₹1.58 crore. Ecotourism facilities for tourists will be part of the project. A floating restaurant and related amenities will be built at a cost of ₹94.20 lakh.

An amount of ₹25 lakh had been earmarked for coastal protection and completing a green cover for the coast, Mr. Unnikrishnan said. Auto electric kiosks for women will be set up at a cost of ₹37.50 lakh.

A total of 150 artificial reefs will be set up at a cost of ₹31 lakh. A public toilet complex will be set up at a cost of ₹50 lakh at the Nayaramablam fish landing centre. Nayarambalam panchayat president Neethu Binod was among those present at the press meet here on Monday.
